I am so, so excited to share with you a bit more about the skincare service that I am loving right now, microneedling!
If you haven’t heard the term microneedling yet, it is time for it to enter your life! This service is taking the skincare world by storm, and our staff and clients are loving all that it is doing for our skin.
Today on the blog, I am going to break down exactly what microneedling is, why people are loving it, and what you can expect before, during and after treatment. Feel free to read along if you are interested in the magic that this treatment does to the skin!
So, What Is Exactly Is Microneedling?
One of the little known facts about our skin is that, as we age, we begin to lose collagen and elastin in our skin (which is exactly what keeps us bright and tight). What microneedling does, through a minimally invasive treatment, is safely trigger your skin’s natural wound response to produce new collagen and elastin, ultimately making your skin look and feel younger and firmer! Sounds amazing, right?
There are so many other benefits to microneedling which make this treatment worth every penny. Microneedling is great for most skin types and does a number on acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and fine lines and wrinkles, all contributing to a dewy, youthful glow that you just can’t get with at-home treatments.
So, if you are looking for a quick, mostly painless, and effective way to improve the texture, tone and overall appearance of your skin, microneedling is a great option for you.
Is Microneedling Right for Me?
For nearly everyone, the answer is YES! One of the best things about microneedling is that it is great for almost every skin type at every age. I love this treatment because it has the ability to address so many issues, all with minimal downtime!
There are, of course, a few exceptions to every rule, and so if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you may have to wait a little bit. This is mainly because you are not able to use the numbing cream prior to treatment, and that could make the experience unpleasant for you, which is not what we want at all!
Also, if you have any open wounds on your face, neck or decollete, cystic acne, active pustular acne, or active cold sores, you will want to wait as microneedling may make those conditions worse.
Finally, this service is not ideal for you if you are diabetic, have blood clotting issues, have a history of keloid scars, have an immunity disorder, or if you are on accutane or other skin thinning or blood thinning medications. We want to protect you, and so, while this service may not be for you, we do have other great options to help you achieve your skin goals and would love to consult with you!
What to Expect?
Once you bring your beautiful self into the studio, your aesthetician will help you to get comfortable, will thoroughly cleanse your face and remove any and all makeup, and will then apply a numbing cream all over your face to ensure maximum comfort during your treatment. The numbing cream will then be allowed to do its magic, and in about 15-20 minutes your treatment will begin.
Once your face is completely numb, it’s time to get microneedled! The tool that will be used to perform the service looks like a large pen, and with the pen, your aesthetician will work in sections on your skin, making sure to target any specific areas that you are looking to improve.
You can expect the treatment to last between 20-25 minutes, making it a quick, easy, and nearly painless experience. Most people find that the sensation actually feels like a tickle or light scratching — some even say it feels like a massage for their face!
Once the treatment is finished you can expect to see a couple of things:
Redness and mild swelling (similar to a sunburn) which generally subside within 24-48 hours and can be covered by makeup after 12. The levels of redness and swelling vary from person to person, but are completely normal and should not be a cause for alarm.
Tenderness and warmth (similar to a sunburn) from the time your numbing cream wears off to about 12 hours post-treatment.
Directly after your treatment, you will want to avoid swimming, exercise or other strenuous activities, and direct sunlight for 24 hours. What a great excuse to go home, relax, and post selfies of your beautiful glow (using our hashtag #iamakinleykaybeauty, of course ;))!
Within the first day or two after treatment you will begin to notice some beautiful, glowy results, but you may also notice minor peeling and flaking of the skin. Totally normal! For this, we highly recommend using a good moisturizer and a quality sunscreen in order to hydrate your skin and minimize dryness. It is also very important to let the area heal on its own, so no matter how desperately you want to pick at that loose skin, let it be, girlfriend! 😉
Despite the redness and minor swelling that you may experience post-treatment, you will almost immediately see and feel the tightening and brightening benefits of microneedling. Your skin will likely be glowy, plumped and refreshed the minute you hop off the bed and head out the door! Yay!
With that said, the most noticeable results will be seen 1-6 weeks post treatment, as your collagen production begins to do it’s magic — reducing fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, acne scarring, and smoothing out the texture of your skin.
While one treatment will give your skin a beautiful glow, we do recommend treatments every 4-6 weeks for 4-5 treatments to successfully target your specific skin issues. Once we are able to significantly improve your skin issues, we recommend two yearly treatments to maintain your results.
We would absolutely love to see you in studio and help you achieve the skin of your dreams! We currently have a microneedling promotion running, so scoop up your spot today by clicking on the link HERE.
