The Three Acne Types & How To Treat Them

Of all the skin concerns that we see at the studio, acne is by far the largest. This skin disorder affects up to 50 million Americans annually, and while we understand that acne often happens while teens are going through puberty, the reality is that it can impact people even into their 30s and 40s. Whether you have experienced acne all of your life or are just beginning to deal with it now, trying to figure out the solution can be a tricky beast as its type and severity varies from person to person.

In order to successfully treat your acne, it is important to understand what acne is and what type (or types) you may be dealing with. One we discover what is happening to your skin, we, as your aestheticians, will be able to support you in finding a solution and giving you the skin that you have always dreamed of!

So, what exactly is acne?
Acne is a disorder of the skin that occurs when your hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. Because most oil glands are found on the face, neck and chest, these are the most common places for acne to show up.

Acne Types: In order to truly treat what you are experiencing on the skin, it is extremely important to know what type of acne you are dealing with. Depending upon the type, certain treatments could exacerbate the symptoms and make your skin worse.

  1. Inflamed
    1. Nodules and Cysts are most easily described as hardened lumps deep beneath the skin. These bumps are typically red and tender to the touch.
  2. Surface Texture
    1. Whiteheads are clogged pores with very little inflammation.
    2. Papules are inflamed clogged pores, meaning that they are red and perhaps a little tender. These are also the most common type of pimple.
    3. Pustules are pimples containing white or yellow pus.
  3. Pore Size
    1. Blackheads are little bumps on the surface of the skin that are caused by blocked pores. Blackheads are often quite dark and make pores more visible.

Now what?
At this point you might have an idea of what is happening on your skin, but are not sure what to do next. This is where we come in. As skin experts, we are able to support you in professional treatments that will target and destroy this stubborn skin concern.
Here are the services that we typically recommend based on the type of acne you are experiencing:

Inflamed Acne

  1. High Frequency Treatment – The high frequency electrical current is a powerful tool to eliminate toxins and acne causing bacteria. It also reduces inflammation in stubborn cystic acne.
  2. Enzyme Treatment – This treatment eats away at your dead skin like a little Pac-man, leaving you with a refreshed surface while also helping to battle painful inflammation.

Surface Texture

  1. Dermaplane Treatment – Our dermaplane treatment removes the top layer of dead skin, eliminating excess oil, unclogging pores, and fighting against future acne breakouts. This treatment can also help with acne scarring.
  2. Enzyme Treatment – Because our enzyme treatments eat away at the dead skin and debris on your face, it pushes any breakouts to the surface, allowing them to be removed — ultimately leaving a soft, smooth face behind.
  3. Microneedling Treatment – This service is the MVP if you are looking to change the texture and overall appearance of your skin. Not only does it tackle your current breakouts, but it also produces new collagen helping to deal with any acne scarring while giving you that dream glow.

Pore Size

  1. Enzyme Treatment – The enzyme is like the cleanup crew for your skin. It sloughs away dead skin, clears your pores, and removes the debris and oil blocked in there, getting rid of the blackheads that make your pores look more prominent.
  2. Microneedling Treatment – Microneedling is one of the most effective ways to improve the texture of your skin and keep it youthful and glowy. This service also dramatically helps minimize the appearance of pores.

Depending upon the type of acne you are experiencing and your skin goals we may recommend a specific treatment or series of treatments to get your skin exactly where you would like it to be.
